It is located on the east side of the island- 20 kilometers far from Rhodes city. In the past it was the capital of the Municipality of Vrigindarioi.Afandou city is surrounded by three hills and many support that the city took its name [which means unseen in Greek] from its location- as it was chosen so that it could not be seen by the pirates. So- the village of the past that is now a city was ¿adanto¿- that is unseen.According to others- the village was named after Efantos- a rich landholder who lived there.Ancient monuments- temples and tombs that have been preserved till today in the wider area of Afandou show that the region has a long history since antiquity.Afandou city is famous for its very long beach- perhaps the most popular on the island- which is about four kilometers long- with the small pebbles and the sand- as well as for the golf course in the region. The beach is only two kilometers away from the city center while those who do not like walking can take the small train of the City.At the city square- where the City Hall is- there is the imposing three-aisled church of Panagia- with the beautiful and tall bell tower. There are a lot of churches and chapels in the region- such as Agios Georgios close to the square- Panagia Katholiki on the way to the beach- which is a religious- historical and archaeological monument- Profitis Ilias on the top of the hill with the same name- Agios Loukas who is the patron Saint of the city and Agios Andreas. The traditional distinctive houses of the village that has now become Afandou city- have been replaced by modern ones- both because the needs of the people have changed and thanks to the economic development of the region. So today only very few of the old characteristic houses are preserved with the yards full of fragrant flowers and the traditional decoration with the plates above the fireplace. It is worth walking round the city- along the streets with the cafes- the old neighbourhoods with the narrow streets and the attached houses- characteristic features of the older village. The natural environment round the city consists mainly of olive groves. The Afandou plain that extends on the south-eastern side of the city and goes as far as Colymbia is impressive. The plain is full of thousands olive trees- citrus trees and cultivated areas. An especially beautiful area is Pelemoni on the west side of the village with luxuriant vegetation mainly thanks to the abundant water in the region. The roads that cross this region offer a lot of opportunities to explore and enjoy the unspoiled natural environment. The wider area ha
